Rock Chip or Crack? How to Tell If Your Windshield Can Be Repaired

Why It Matters
Almost every driver around Tulsa has heard that sharp "tick" on the highway. Sometimes it leaves nothing. Sometimes it leaves a small star or bullseye that you can barely see. And sometimes, a few days later, that little chip has turned into a crack running across the glass.
The difference between a quick chip repair and a full windshield replacement often comes down to how big the damage is, where it is, and how quickly you deal with it. A repair is faster, cheaper and keeps your original factory seal. A replacement is sometimes the only safe option. Here is how to tell which one you are looking at.
Types of Windshield Damage
- Bullseye: A round, cone-shaped chip, usually from a small rock. Often very repairable.
- Star break: A small impact point with short legs radiating out. Repairable if caught before the legs grow.
- Combination break: A bullseye with star legs. Usually repairable if it is small.
- Edge crack: A crack that starts within a couple of inches of the edge of the glass. These tend to spread and usually mean replacement.
- Long crack: A single line crack. Short cracks can sometimes be repaired; long ones generally cannot.
The Quick Repair Checklist
A chip is usually a good candidate for repair when:
- It is about the size of a quarter or smaller.
- Any crack coming off it is shorter than a few inches.
- It is not directly in the driver's line of sight.
- It is not at the very edge of the windshield.
- Only the outer layer of glass is damaged.
- It has not been packed with dirt or washer fluid for weeks.
If your damage checks those boxes, a rock chip repair usually takes about 20–30 minutes and we can do it wherever your car is parked. Many comprehensive insurance policies cover chip repair with little or no out-of-pocket cost, but every policy is different, so check yours.
When Replacement Is the Answer
We will recommend a windshield replacement when:
- The crack is long or still spreading.
- The damage is in the driver's direct field of view, where even a good repair can leave a slight distortion.
- The crack reaches the edge of the glass.
- There are several chips or cracks in the same windshield.
- The damage goes through both layers of the laminated glass.
If your vehicle has a forward-facing camera for lane-keep assist or automatic braking, a new windshield usually means the camera needs to be recalibrated as well. See our ADAS calibration page for what that involves.
Oklahoma Weather and Chips
Our weather is hard on glass. A sunny afternoon can heat a windshield quickly, and blasting the defroster on a cold morning puts sudden stress on the glass. Both can turn a stable chip into a running crack overnight. Spring storms and hail add their own damage.
That is the main reason we tell people not to wait. A chip that could have been repaired this week may need a full replacement next week.
What to Do Right Now
- Cover the chip with a piece of clear tape to keep dirt and water out.
- Avoid aiming the defroster or A/C directly at the windshield.
- Do not slam doors, and skip the car wash until it is fixed.
- Take a clear photo with a coin next to the damage for scale, then text it to us and we will tell you whether it can be repaired.
